When the calendar says, "Baking Demo: Cookies with Patrick," folks gather around.  Today, Patrick Boylan, a baker at Thompson Senior Living Communities, shared his family recipe for the favorite molasses cookies!  Patrick did his training at Le Cordon Bleu in New Hampshire and has quite some skills in the baking department.  He demostrated how he assembles a batch of the molasses cookies and while he prepared the dough in his very own orange kitchenaid mixer (a gift from his Mom) he told us about the baked goods he prefers to make in our kitchen.  He loves to decorate cakes and cookies.  One of his other family recipes that he prepares for the residents is a raspberry cheesecake.  He enjoys baking and decorating wedding cakes and says that his passion came from his mother's love of baking.  it was a special treat to meet one of our talented cooks and to hear some of his personal story.  Thank you Patrick!

The LAUGHTER!  The FUN!  The JOY!  It all happened this afternoon when we were visited by the Bloomfield Middle School Uplevel Students!  Their Mission? To uplift the community.  Students arrived with their teachers, Keith Roll, 6th grade English, and Debbie Davis, 6th grade special education.  Our residents know how to have fun and when a bunch of middle schoolers show up the place erupts with excitment!  Thank you Bloomfield Middle Schoolers.  Your mission was accomplished today!

Making artificial poppies is a long-standing tradition and today we all pitched in to help the local Veterans Affairs assemble poppies. Close to 400 poppies were assembled and we had a good time sharing stories and remembering our own experiences with the symbolic poppy.

Today at Clark Meadows, Katherine McGrath lead the Music History series with a new topic.  Great Concuctors, such as Marin Alsop, Lorin Verncove Maazel, Herbert von Karajan, Juliette Nadia Boulanger, and Fritz Reiner were featured.  So interesting to learn about the different styles and what all those hand gestures and arm motions mean!

Music History

Our Music History series for July is jam packed!

Katherine McGrath has created this wonderful series for those who love music and want to learn a little history. The first week highlighted Robert Johnson and his influence on later generations of musicians. Next, How Classical Music Shapes Popular Songs, and today we heard about the Harlem Renaissance. I had the pleasure of sitting in on this class. So many artists came out of Harlem during this time. We listened to Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, and others. Katherine started the class by sharing the painting, Subway, 1934 by Lily Furedi, showing passengers of different races, classes, genders, and national backgrounds all riding together with no sign of friction. Her presentation referenced the Smithsonian American Art Museum's publication, "New York City: The Harlem Renaissance and Beyond."

Katherine is masterfully presenting this month’s series making it very relatable to her audience. Next week’s topic is an “Intro to Big Band Composers.”  Katherine has her undergraduate degree in Music Therapy and she is currently working toward a Masters in Thanatology. The classes are fun and interactive. There was lots of discussion today about the Harlem Renaissance and the great music that came out of this period. It's music that we all know and love.
