When the calendar says, "Baking Demo: Cookies with Patrick," folks gather around.  Today, Patrick Boylan, a baker at Thompson Senior Living Communities, shared his family recipe for the favorite molasses cookies!  Patrick did his training at Le Cordon Bleu in New Hampshire and has quite some skills in the baking department.  He demostrated how he assembles a batch of the molasses cookies and while he prepared the dough in his very own orange kitchenaid mixer (a gift from his Mom) he told us about the baked goods he prefers to make in our kitchen.  He loves to decorate cakes and cookies.  One of his other family recipes that he prepares for the residents is a raspberry cheesecake.  He enjoys baking and decorating wedding cakes and says that his passion came from his mother's love of baking.  it was a special treat to meet one of our talented cooks and to hear some of his personal story.  Thank you Patrick!

The LAUGHTER!  The FUN!  The JOY!  It all happened this afternoon when we were visited by the Bloomfield Middle School Uplevel Students!  Their Mission? To uplift the community.  Students arrived with their teachers, Keith Roll, 6th grade English, and Debbie Davis, 6th grade special education.  Our residents know how to have fun and when a bunch of middle schoolers show up the place erupts with excitment!  Thank you Bloomfield Middle Schoolers.  Your mission was accomplished today!

Making artificial poppies is a long-standing tradition and today we all pitched in to help the local Veterans Affairs assemble poppies. Close to 400 poppies were assembled and we had a good time sharing stories and remembering our own experiences with the symbolic poppy.

Today at Clark Meadows, Katherine McGrath lead the Music History series with a new topic.  Great Concuctors, such as Marin Alsop, Lorin Verncove Maazel, Herbert von Karajan, Juliette Nadia Boulanger, and Fritz Reiner were featured.  So interesting to learn about the different styles and what all those hand gestures and arm motions mean!

Life-long Learning at Ferris Hills

Life-long Learning at Ferris Hills

John & Dolores Granito, active members of the Ferris Hills community

The erudite population at Ferris Hills consists of life-long learners and educators. They do this with so much style and fun.

John and Dolores Granito have been here about a year and have jumped right into life in a vibrant senior community.  Together, they have shared with us their wedding anniversary, celebrating 60 years.  We all enjoyed seeing pictures of them in their younger years and hearing their love story.  We imbibed with champagne, wine, and a celebratory cake.  Cheers to the happy couple!  Sharing these life events brings us all closer together.

They also helped plan a themed event honoring the history of the Titanic with a lecture followed by an evening in the dining room enjoying food selected from an authentic menu found on the Titanic.

Today, John, with the assistance of his wife (the power point aficionado), presented “Whatever Happened to Amelia Earhart?” America’s longest running mystery question and conspiracy theory 1937 – Today.

It was a packed house for John’s presentation.  He had an interesting timeline of Amelia’s life along with a list of key persons related to Amelia’s desire to circumvent the globe.  He set the stage for conspiracy theories and thoughtful historical recollection.  The plot thickens as we await Part 2 coming this Thursday.
