Members of the Ferris Hills community were transported to the lush 50-acre site which boasts beautiful gardens, a historic mansion, and functional greenhouse. Despite a little bit of rain, the group still enjoyed the scenic estate and its surroundings. The location also offers views of Canandaigua Lake, which of course feels like home to Ferris Hills residents who enjoy a view of the lake regularly. The preserved mansion was built in 1887 and owned previously by Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson. The gardens would be installed 15 years later and were infused with Victorian, Colonial, and Japanese influences. Seeing as the grounds are so expansive, golf cart-style shuttles were available take residents on a tour of this landmark and learn more about its rich history, regional wine offerings, and horticulture tips. The sentiments of delight expressed by the Ferris Hills community members in attendance are shared by many others. Commentary about the Sonnenberg Gardens experience includes the following: “The variety of the gardens, the unusual trees, the kindness of the staff all impressed us. Lots of things to see and a tram to help you get around without too much walking. Lovely home with views of different gardens out each window. The lady who put this garden together had a very creative mind!” “It was fun to tour the property and read about the history. The Japanese Tea Room was a lovely spot with the Japanese Maples nearby. I really enjoyed the massive rose garden. The mansion was beautiful inside and out. So many bedrooms and bathrooms! The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly.” “We are so glad this mansion is open to the public. The workmanship, without power tools for the most part, is unbelievable. The carpenters and stone masons were true artists, (and starving artists, we presume). But none the less fantastic to view. Well worth the trip. Spend a few amazing hours.” “Whether you have just few minutes or a few hours, Sonnenberg Gardens is a must-see if you're in the Finger Lakes area! The docents and tour guides are both knowledgeable and entertaining! The Japanese garden was our favorite!” “This place is amazing. Great for a walk and strolling through the amazing gardens. It’s like traveling to Japan, Rome, England and more all in one place. Definitely magical.” “Beautiful gardens and amazing mansion.....self guided tour through the house...sitting on the patio looking out at the grounds is amazing. Ambiance is second to none.”[1] Ferris Hills-sponsored excursions like this one to Sonnenberg offer benefits for residents beyond the fond memories. Studies have proven that there are many physical and mental benefits to getting outside. Spending time in nature has been linked to improved attention spans (short and long term), boosts in serotonin (the “feel good” neurotransmitter), and shows increased activity in the parts of the brain responsible for empathy, emotional stability, and love. Ferris Hills is proud to be able to offer enriching day trips offsite like this one to Sonnenberg. Be sure to check out additional excursion photos below.
